SASSA Status Pending: How Long Does It Take? (2026)

Updated on 17 March 2026

You've checked your SASSA SRD status and it shows "Pending". This is one of the most common - and most frustrating - statuses to see. Thousands of South Africans search for answers about how long pending takes and what they can do about it.

This page explains exactly what a pending status means, how long you should expect to wait depending on your situation, and when it makes sense to escalate.

What Does "Pending" Mean on Your SASSA SRD Status?

A Pending status means SASSA is still busy verifying your information for that specific month. SASSA does not simply approve or decline you based on your application alone - it runs your details through multiple government and financial databases every month. These checks include:

  • Department of Home Affairs (DHA) - confirming your identity, age, and citizenship or residency status
  • South African Revenue Service (SARS) - checking for declared income
  • Banks - verifying whether you have deposits or income in your bank accounts
  • UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) - checking whether you are registered as a UIF recipient
  • NSFAS - confirming you are not receiving student funding
  • Other SASSA grants - ensuring you are not already receiving another social grant

While these checks are running, your status remains Pending. Once all checks are complete, your status will change to either Approved or Declined.

How Long Does Pending Usually Take?

The time a pending status takes depends on your specific situation. Here are the typical timelines:

Monthly assessment (existing applicant)

If you already have an active SRD application and your status shows pending for a new month, this is the normal monthly verification. It typically resolves within 1 to 2 weeks. Most existing applicants see their status update to Approved or Declined by mid-month. If you're still pending by the 20th of the month, check again daily - it may change right before the payment window opens on the 25th.

First-time application pending

If you have just applied for the SRD grant for the first time, SASSA needs to run a full set of verification checks. This initial processing takes longer than monthly re-checks. Expect 2 to 4 weeks for your first application to move from pending to approved or declined. In busy periods (such as after a grant amount increase), it can take up to 6 weeks.

Reapplication pending

A reapplication happens when your previous SRD application was cancelled (for example, because you didn't reconfirm) or expired, and you submit a new one. A reapplication triggers a fresh set of verification checks similar to a first-time application. Typical processing time: 2 to 6 weeks.

Important: Do not submit multiple reapplications. Submitting more than one does not speed up the process and can cause confusion or delays in SASSA's system.

Reconsideration pending

A reconsideration is when SASSA reviews a previous decline after you have provided additional information or disputed the decision directly with SASSA (this is different from a formal appeal through ITSAA). Reconsiderations typically take 4 to 8 weeks because they require manual review by SASSA staff.

If you have a formal appeal through ITSAA, that process can take 60 to 90 days and has a separate status. Check our appeals guide for more details.

Pending Status Variations You May See

Your status page may show specific pending sub-statuses that give you more information about what's happening:

  • Pending - general verification in progress. No action needed from you
  • Pending DHA Verification - your identity is being confirmed with Home Affairs. This usually takes a few days
  • Awaiting Identity Verification - identity checks are queued. You may receive an SMS asking you to take a selfie or complete biometric verification. Do this immediately if you receive it
  • Identity Verification Failed / Referred - the initial identity check did not match. SASSA is reviewing your case further. Double-check that your ID number, names, and surname are correct on your application
  • Pending - Bank Details Verification - SASSA is verifying your banking information. Ensure your bank account is active and in your own name

What to Do While Your Status is Pending

While waiting for your status to change, there are a few things you should - and shouldn't - do:

Do these things

  • Check your status regularly - visit srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status every few days to see if your status has updated
  • Make sure your banking details are correct - log into the SRD portal and verify your bank account details. Incorrect details can cause delays. See our banking details guide
  • Complete any identity verification immediately - if you receive an SMS from SASSA with a link to take a selfie or do biometric verification, do it right away. Delays in completing this step will keep your status pending
  • Keep your cellphone active - SASSA communicates via SMS. Make sure the number on your application is active and can receive messages

Don't do these things

  • Don't reapply - submitting another application while one is pending won't help and can cause complications
  • Don't change your cellphone number - if you change phones, call SASSA at 0800 60 10 11 to update your number
  • Don't use unofficial websites or apps - only use srd.sassa.gov.za to check your status. Third-party sites may steal your personal information

When to Worry and When to Escalate

A pending status is normal and expected. However, there are times when it has gone on too long and you should take action:

SituationNormal wait timeEscalate after
Monthly assessment (existing applicant)1-2 weeks3 weeks
First-time application2-4 weeks6 weeks
Reapplication2-6 weeks8 weeks
Reconsideration4-8 weeks10 weeks

How to escalate:

Will I Still Get Paid If My Status Was Pending?

Yes. If your status eventually changes from Pending to Approved - even after the normal payment window has passed - SASSA will back-pay you for that month. The R370 is not lost. It is simply delayed until SASSA completes its verification.

This is one of the key reasons to be patient and not reapply: your pending application is still being processed, and once approved, payment will follow. Make sure your banking details are correct so that when approval comes through, payment is not delayed further.
