Gauteng Load Reduction Schedule (18-25 April 2026)
Updated Saturday, 18 April 2026 - refreshes hourly
Parts of Gauteng will continue to face scheduled load reduction this week (18-25 April 2026) as Eskom rolls out power cuts across Ekurhuleni, Soweto and surrounds, Tshwane, Sedibeng, West Rand, Orange Farm and surrounds and northern Johannesburg. The schedule affects both the morning (05:00 to 09:00) and evening (17:00 to 22:00) peak periods, with outages lasting four to five hours. While load shedding remains suspended nationally after 300+ days, load reduction continues in areas where infrastructure is under pressure from illegal connections and overloading. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Gauteng load reduction schedule for this week?
This week (18-25 April 2026), Eskom is implementing load reduction across 99+ Gauteng areas including Chiawelo, Kagiso, Evaton. Power is cut daily from 05:00-09:00 and 17:00-22:00 on a rotating block schedule. See the full schedule above or use the area search to find your area.
What time is load reduction in Gauteng?
Load reduction in Gauteng is scheduled daily during two peak windows: 05:00 to 09:00 (morning) and 17:00 to 22:00 (evening). Outages last 4-5 hours depending on your area and block rotation. Check the schedule above to see today's times for your area.
What is the difference between load shedding and load reduction?
Load shedding is a national response to insufficient generation capacity, affecting the whole country on a stage-based schedule. Load reduction is localised - it targets specific areas where electricity infrastructure is overloaded due to illegal connections, theft, or ageing equipment. South Africa has been load shedding-free for over 300 days, but load reduction continues in affected Gauteng communities. Check your load shedding schedule separately.
Why does my area keep getting load reduction?
Areas are targeted for load reduction because local electricity networks are overloaded. Common causes include illegal connections, electricity theft, high-density informal settlements putting strain on equipment not designed for the load, and ageing transformers. Eskom implements load reduction to prevent equipment damage that would cause much longer unplanned outages. Use the area search to check your specific area's schedule.
How long does load reduction last?
Each load reduction session lasts 4-5 hours. Morning sessions run from 05:00 to 09:00 and evening sessions from 17:00 to 22:00. Some areas may be affected during both morning and evening windows on the same day, depending on the block rotation.
Is load reduction the same every week?
No. Eskom rotates the schedule across different blocks (A through J). This means the specific days your area is affected change from week to week, though the time windows (05:00-09:00 and 17:00-22:00) remain the same. Bookmark this page and check the schedule weekly for updates.
What Is Load Reduction?
Load reduction is not the same as load shedding. While load shedding is a national response to generation shortfalls, load reduction targets specific areas where local electricity networks are overloaded - typically due to illegal connections, theft, and ageing infrastructure. South Africa has gone over 300 days without load shedding, but load reduction continues in affected Gauteng communities.
Without load reduction, the overloading would cause equipment failures and much longer unplanned outages. Eskom rotates outages across blocks (A through J), so the specific days your area is affected change weekly. Report illegal connections to Eskom on 08600 37566.
