SASSA Payment Not Received? Step-by-Step Guide to Get Your Money

Updated on 06 November 2026

Your SASSA payment has not arrived. You need your money now. This guide walks you through the exact steps to take, in the right order, so you do not waste a trip to a SASSA office or lose your place in the queue. It covers every grant: SRD R370, Old Age, Disability, Child Support, Care Dependency, Foster Child and War Veterans.

Most missing payments are fixed in 3 to 7 working days once you follow the right steps. The biggest mistake people make is panicking on day one and cancelling their application, which resets the queue and delays everything by weeks.

Quick answer:
1) Check today is actually your payment day. 2) Check your status on srd.sassa.gov.za. 3) Wait 3 working days for bank clearing. 4) If still nothing, call 0800 60 10 11 with your ID number and get an incident reference number.

First thing to do - check the payment date

Before anything else, confirm that today is actually your scheduled payment date. SASSA pays different grants on different days of the month. If you check on the wrong day, the money will not be there - because it was never due yet.

Scheduled payment days by grant type

  • Older Persons Grant: 1st working day of the month
  • Disability Grant: 2nd to 3rd working day of the month
  • Children's Grants (Child Support, Foster Child, Care Dependency): 4th to 5th working day of the month
  • SRD R370: 24th to the end of the month (different days for different people)

Working days exclude Saturdays, Sundays and South African public holidays. If your payment day falls on a holiday, it moves to the next working day.

Check the exact dates for this month: November 2026 SASSA payment dates. You can also view the full 2026 payment calendar.

If today is not your scheduled day: stop here. Your payment is not late. Come back on or after the correct day. Refreshing the bank app every 10 minutes will not make the money arrive sooner.

Check your status online - before doing anything else

Almost every payment problem can be diagnosed from your SASSA status page. Check this before you spend time on hold to a call centre.

Step-by-step status check (SRD R370)

  1. Open srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status in any browser.
  2. Enter your South African ID number.
  3. Enter the phone number you applied with.
  4. Submit and wait for the status to load.
  5. Look at the status for the current month and the past 2 months.

Your status will be one of: Approved, Pending, Declined, Referred, or Paid. Each one needs a different action - see the sections below.

For a full breakdown of every possible status and what it means, see our SRD status decoder. To check status for other grants (Old Age, Disability, Child Support), use SASSA WhatsApp on 082 046 8553 or call 0800 60 10 11.

See our full SRD status check guide if you have trouble logging in.

This is the most stressful situation - the system says your money was sent, but your bank account is empty. Work through these steps in order. Do not skip ahead.

Step 1: Check your bank statement (not just the balance)

Open your bank app and look at the full transaction list for the last 3 working days. Sometimes a SASSA deposit arrives but the app balance has not refreshed, or the deposit is labelled differently to what you expect. Look for any incoming credit from SASSA, SOC SEC, or SOCIAL DEV. Bank-to-bank transfers can take 1 to 3 working days to reflect.

Step 2: Verify your banking details are correct

Log in at srd.sassa.gov.za and check the account number on file. Compare it digit by digit against your bank card or a recent statement. A single transposed number sends the money to the wrong account. See our SRD banking details guide for how to update them.

Step 3: Contact your bank

Call your bank's call centre with the SASSA payment date and the amount expected. Ask them to check incoming deposits on that date. If they confirm nothing arrived, ask whether the deposit was rejected (closed account, wrong account holder name) and reversed. Get a reference number from the bank.

Step 4: If wrong account, contact SASSA immediately

If you find that the money was sent to a wrong or closed account, do not try to fix it on your own. Call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 and explain that you need a payment trace and reversal. SASSA can then redirect the next payment to the correct account.

Step 5: Get an incident reference number

Every time you talk to SASSA about a missing payment, ask for an incident or case reference number. Write it down. Without a reference number, your complaint cannot be tracked between SASSA staff, and you will have to start the explanation over every time you call.

If status shows Approved but no Paid yet

Do not panic. Approved without Paid is normal for the first 3 to 7 working days after your status changes. The approval and the payment are two separate steps. SASSA approves you, then National Treasury adds your file to a payment batch, then your bank clears it.

  • Less than 7 working days since approval: normal, wait.
  • 7 to 14 working days: check your banking details are correct.
  • 14+ working days: contact SASSA.

Full guide and exact timeline: SRD Approved but no pay date.

If status shows Pending

Pending means SASSA has not yet decided. The wait depends on whether this is a new application or a monthly reapproval.

  • Monthly reapprovals: 5 to 10 working days is normal.
  • New applications: 30 to 90 days. SASSA must check ID, income, UIF and other databases for first-time applicants.

Do not cancel and reapply - this resets the queue. Just wait. Full guide: SRD status pending.

If status shows Declined or Referred

If your status is Declined or Referred, you will not be paid for that month. The most common reasons are detected income above the means test, receiving another grant, or a database mismatch with Home Affairs.

  • Read the decline reason carefully - it tells you what to fix.
  • You can appeal a decline within 90 days.
  • If income was detected, check your bank statement for the transfer that triggered it.

Common decline reasons explained: SRD declined. Appeals process: SRD appeals.

Calling SASSA - exactly what to say

The SASSA toll-free line is 0800 60 10 11. Calls are free from any phone. Lines are open Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 16:00. Try calling before 9:00 or after 14:00 for shorter wait times.

Have ready before you dial

  • Your South African ID number
  • Your application reference number (if you have one)
  • The grant type you are calling about
  • The payment date that was expected
  • The current status on the portal
  • A pen and paper for the incident reference number

Sample script

"Hi, I am calling about my SRD R370 payment for November 2026. My ID number is [your ID]. My status on the portal shows [Approved / Paid / Pending], but I have not received the payment. Can you check what is happening with my file and give me an incident reference number please?"

If you do not get a clear answer, politely ask: "Can you escalate this to a supervisor please?" and write down the supervisor's name and any new reference number.

When to visit a SASSA office in person

A phone call resolves most issues, but some problems need an in-person visit. Go to an office if any of these apply:

  • Your status has not changed in 30+ days.
  • The system shows paid but you did not get the money.
  • You have a banking detail dispute that the call centre cannot resolve.
  • You need to update biometric records or do a life certificate.
  • You have been given the runaround on the phone for more than 2 calls.

What to bring

  • Your South African ID document (green ID book or smart ID card)
  • Your application reference number
  • A recent bank statement (last 30 days)
  • Any SMS notifications from SASSA
  • The incident reference numbers from previous calls

Find your nearest office: SASSA branch finder.

Postbank Black Card not working

If your money has arrived but your card will not work at the ATM or shop, the card itself may be blocked, stolen, or damaged. Act immediately - do not wait.

  • Block the card immediately: call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55. This is the only way to stop someone using it.
  • Replace the card: visit any Post Office branch with your ID. A new card is usually issued the same day, sometimes with a 1 to 3 day delay.
  • Money still belongs to you: blocking the card does not stop your SASSA payments. The money stays in your account and you can withdraw it once the new card is active.

Full card replacement process: SASSA card lost or stolen. The old gold card was phased out on 31 August 2026 - if you are still on the gold card, get a Black Card now: SASSA gold card replacement.

When all else fails - escalation chain

If you have tried the steps above and still have no payment, escalate in this order. Each step makes the next one stronger.

  1. SASSA call centre: 0800 60 10 11. Get an incident reference number.
  2. SASSA WhatsApp: 082 046 8553. Creates a written record.
  3. SASSA office visit: in person with your ID and prior reference numbers.
  4. SASSA email complaint: GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za - written paper trail.
  5. Public Protector if SASSA is unresponsive for more than 30 days: pprotect.org or 0800 11 20 40.
  6. Public Service Commission: for complaints about how SASSA staff treated you: psc.gov.za.

Keep every reference number, every SMS, every screenshot, and the date of every call. A paper trail is the single strongest tool you have.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I wait before reporting a missing payment?
Wait 3 working days from the scheduled date. Bank clearing and SASSA payment runs can each take 1 to 3 working days. After 3 working days call 0800 60 10 11 with your ID number and ask for an incident reference number.
Will I get back-pay for delayed SASSA payments?
Yes. If a payment was delayed by a SASSA system error or banking issue, you receive the full amount once it is fixed. SASSA does not forfeit approved payments. The exception is if your grant was suspended because you missed a reconfirmation or life certificate.
Can my payment go to the wrong account?
Yes, if your banking details on file are wrong. SASSA pays the account number you submitted. If you changed banks without updating SASSA, the payment can go to the old account and bounce. Always check banking details on the SRD banking portal if anything has changed.
What if SASSA shows paid but my bank shows nothing?
Wait 1 to 3 working days first - bank clearing takes time. Check your bank statement (not just the app balance). If after 3 working days the bank confirms no deposit, call your bank with the SASSA payment date, then call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11. Get an incident reference number.
Who is responsible if my SASSA money is stolen?
If money is stolen by banking error or SASSA mistake, SASSA and the bank must investigate and refund. If your card is stolen and used, block the card on 0800 53 54 55, report to SAPS and SASSA, and apply for a new card. Refund depends on whether the card was reported lost in time.
How do I escalate a SASSA payment complaint?
Start with 0800 60 10 11 and get an incident reference. After 14 days unresolved, visit a SASSA office in person with your ID and the reference. After 30 days unresolved, lodge with the Public Protector or Public Service Commission. Keep every reference number, SMS, and screenshot.
