About Power Outages in eThekwini
eThekwini Electricity is the utility responsible for distributing electricity across the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, which covers Durban, Umhlanga, Pinetown, Chatsworth, Phoenix, Tongaat, Verulam, Amanzimtoti and the surrounding areas. Bulk supply comes from Eskom, and eThekwini handles local distribution to homes and businesses.
Unplanned outages in Durban typically come from four sources:
- Cable theft and vandalism - copper theft is a recurring cause of multi-day outages, especially in industrial areas like Phoenix, New Germany and Mobeni.
- Storm damage - heavy summer storms along the KZN coast bring down overhead lines and trigger lightning faults at substations.
- Cable and equipment faults - ageing underground cables in older suburbs like Berea, Morningside and Glenwood fail without warning.
- Planned maintenance - announced ahead of time by eThekwini Electricity, usually in 6-10 hour windows.
These are different from national load shedding, which is driven by Eskom generation shortfalls and affects the whole country on a rotation.
