About Power Outages in Nelson Mandela Bay

NMB Metro Electricity is the utility responsible for distributing electricity across the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, which covers Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), Uitenhage (Kariega), and Despatch. Bulk supply comes from Eskom, and NMB handles local distribution.

Unplanned outages in NMB typically come from three sources:

  • Cable and equipment faults - ageing infrastructure, especially in older suburbs like Central and Walmer.
  • Planned maintenance - announced ahead of time on @NMandelaBaymuni.
  • Load reduction - applied during peak-demand periods to prevent transformer overload in specific feeder areas.

These are different from national load shedding, which is driven by Eskom generation shortfalls and affects the whole country on a rotation.
