"Identity verification failed" - what it means and how to fix it

Updated on 30 April 2026

If your SASSA SRD status shows "Identity verification failed" (sometimes "DHA verification failed" or "Identity mismatch"), it means SASSA's automated check against the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) database could not match the details on your SRD application to the DHA's records for that ID number.

This is one of the more common decline reasons because the DHA database is large, sometimes outdated, and any small mismatch trips the automated check.

The most common causes

  • Typo on your SRD application. A single missing letter, extra space, or transposed digit in your ID number is enough to fail.
  • Married surname not updated at DHA. You got married and changed your surname socially but never updated your ID. Your DHA record still has your maiden name; SASSA's check fails if you applied with your married surname.
  • Old / outdated DHA record. If your ID was reissued or your details changed and the DHA database is out of sync, the automated check fails until DHA updates.
  • Fake or fraudulent applications. Anyone using someone else's ID without consent will fail this check. If you suspect identity theft, report it to SAPS and SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.
  • Foreign nationals or refugees. The SRD grant is for South African citizens, permanent residents, refugees, and special-permit holders. If your status is not correctly captured at DHA, the verification fails.

Step 1 - Check your SRD application against your ID document

Take out your green ID book or smart ID card and compare every detail to what you entered on the SRD portal:

  • 13-digit ID number - check digit by digit. The most common error is a transposed pair of digits.
  • First name(s) - exactly as on your ID, including all middle names if your ID lists them.
  • Surname - the surname on your ID, not your married name (unless your ID has been updated).
  • Date of birth - usually pre-filled from the ID number, but worth a check.

Step 2 - Fix typos on the SRD portal

  1. Open srd.sassa.gov.za.
  2. Log in with your ID number and cellphone number, verify with OTP.
  3. Find your application/profile details and correct the typo.
  4. Submit. The verification will be re-run on the next monthly check.

Some fields may not be editable online (the ID number itself, for example). If you cannot fix the issue on the portal, visit any SASSA office with your green ID book or smart ID card and ask them to correct your application.

Step 3 - If your DHA record is outdated

If your SRD application is correct but DHA's records are wrong (e.g. after a name change that was never registered), you must update DHA before the verification will pass:

  1. Visit any Department of Home Affairs office.
  2. Bring your old ID, your marriage certificate (or other supporting document), and proof of address.
  3. Apply for an updated smart ID with the correct details.
  4. Smart ID issuance currently takes about 2-4 weeks.
  5. Once you have the updated ID, log back into the SRD portal and ensure your application matches the new details exactly.

What if the failure is wrong - I'm sure my details are correct?

Sometimes the DHA database is temporarily out of sync, especially after recent re-issues. If you are sure your details on both sides match exactly:

  1. Wait one full month and check the next assessment - the issue may resolve itself when the databases re-sync.
  2. If it persists, submit an appeal within 90 days. Upload a clear copy of your ID document.
  3. Visit a SASSA office in person with your ID. SASSA officials can sometimes manually verify and override the automated check.
  4. Call 0800 60 10 11 for help.

What about my Allpay or Postbank card?

Identity verification is purely about your ID matching DHA records. Your bank account or SASSA card is checked separately. If both your ID and bank details have issues, you may need to fix them in sequence: ID first, then banking. See our banking change guide.

Timeline

  • Typo fix on SRD portal: re-checked within 1-2 days; payment in next cycle.
  • DHA update needed: smart ID issuance 2-4 weeks; then 1-2 days for SRD re-check.
  • Appeal route: 60-90 days for ITSAA decision.

FAQ

What does "identity verification failed" mean on SASSA?
Your details on the SRD application do not match the records that the Department of Home Affairs has for your ID number. The automated check fails until both sides match.
What is the most common cause?
A typo on the SRD application - usually one wrong digit in the ID number, or a misspelled name.
How do I fix it?
Compare your SRD application to your ID document. Fix typos on srd.sassa.gov.za, or visit a SASSA office if you cannot edit a field online. If DHA records are outdated, visit Home Affairs first.
How long does the fix take?
Typo correction: 1-2 days. DHA update: 2-4 weeks. Appeal: 60-90 days.
What if I'm a refugee or special-permit holder?
The SRD grant is open to refugees and special-permit holders, but your status must be correctly captured at DHA. Visit Home Affairs if your status is wrong, then retry SASSA.
