NSFAS Wallet 2026 - How to Access Your Allowance
Last verified 2026-05-14
How NSFAS pays your allowance
NSFAS does not pay your allowance into a standard SA bank account. Instead, funds are paid via NSFAS's authorised payment providers. The provider for your institution depends on what NSFAS has contracted - common ones in 2026 are eZaga, Coinvest (Mastercard), and Tenet Technology.
Some students still receive payments via the old NSFAS Wallet platform (a digital wallet attached to the student's cellphone number). New TVET enrolments since 2023 are mostly on eZaga.
How to access your allowance
- When you are approved for funding, NSFAS sends you a welcome SMS with login details and a card delivery confirmation.
- If you're on Coinvest (Mastercard): the card is delivered to your registered campus or address. Activate via the Coinvest app or USSD.
- If you're on eZaga: register on the eZaga app, verify your ID, choose a 4-digit PIN, and link your cellphone.
- If you're on NSFAS Wallet (older): use *134*176*ID# from your registered cellphone to check balance and transfer.
- Allowances are paid on the schedule for your institution (universities ~30th, TVET ~25th of each month - see our payment dates schedule).
Common 2026 wallet problems
- Cellphone number changed - update via myNSFAS Profile, but the new number won't fully propagate to your wallet provider for 7-14 days
- Card not delivered - contact your institution's NSFAS office, the courier company, or escalate via myNSFAS
- PIN forgotten - reset via the wallet provider's app, USSD or call centre (not via NSFAS directly)
- Payment shows on myNSFAS as approved but no money in wallet - 24-72 hour processing delay is normal; escalate after 5 working days
- Withdraw blocked - usually means KYC documents need re-submitting to the wallet provider
Withdrawing from your wallet
Coinvest Mastercard: use at any ATM (with bank-specific fees) or swipe at participating retailers. Withdrawal limit usually R5,000/day.
eZaga: withdraw via PEP Money, Shoprite Checkers Money Market counter, Boxer, or scan-to-pay at participating retailers.
NSFAS Wallet: limited withdrawal options - typically PEP, Boxer, Shoprite stores. Lower transaction limits than the new wallet providers.
