Last verified 2026-05-14

How to check your NSFAS status

  1. Log in to myNSFAS at https://my.nsfas.org.za
  2. Use your ID number and password (the same credentials you applied with)
  3. Go to Track My Funding Progress
  4. Your current status appears at the top of the page

We also have a detailed status-meaning tool at /tools/nsfas-status that walks through every status.

What each status means

  • Submitted - NSFAS has received your application. No action needed; wait for review.
  • Under Review - NSFAS is verifying your documents and income. Allow 4-8 weeks.
  • Provisionally Funded - approved subject to registration. Register at your institution to convert to full approval.
  • Approved - fully approved; allowances will disburse on the standard cycle once registration is confirmed.
  • Rejected - your application was unsuccessful. See the rejection reason and consider appealing within 30 days.
  • Awaiting Registration - NSFAS is waiting for your institution to confirm you are registered.
  • Disbursement - funds are being paid to your institution (tuition) and your wallet (allowances).

What to do if status hasn't changed for weeks

  • Under Review for more than 8 weeks: contact your institution's NSFAS office
  • Provisionally Funded but no allowance: confirm your institution has reported your registration to NSFAS
  • Approved but no allowance disbursed: check that your wallet (eZaga, Coinvest, NSFAS Wallet) is correctly registered
  • Awaiting Registration for more than 6 weeks of an academic semester: registrar needs to confirm directly with NSFAS
  • Disbursement showing but no money: 24-72 hours typical delay; escalate after 5 working days

Frequently asked questions

How long does NSFAS take to approve an application?
Officially 4-8 weeks. Real-world experience varies - first-time university applications averaging 6-12 weeks, returning students faster.
Why is my status still 'Under Review'?
Either NSFAS is awaiting third-party data (SARS income confirmation, institutional registration) or there's a document review backlog. Allow 8+ weeks before escalating.
What does Provisionally Funded vs Approved mean?
Provisionally Funded = subject to your registration being confirmed. Approved = fully cleared, allowances will pay once registered.
