NSFAS Appeal 2026 - How to Win Your Appeal (Step-by-Step)

Last verified 2026-05-14

Critical rules

You have 30 days from your NSFAS outcome notification to submit an appeal. There are no extensions, no manual email appeals, no late submissions. Appeals are submitted online only through myNSFAS.

Your appeal must directly address the EXACT reason given in your rejection. Generic 'please reconsider' appeals are auto-rejected.

Step-by-step appeal process

  1. Log in to myNSFAS (https://my.nsfas.org.za) with the same credentials you applied with.
  2. Go to Track My Funding Progress. Find the rejection notice and click Submit Appeal.
  3. Select the SPECIFIC reason you are appealing. Match the exact wording.
  4. Write a motivation letter (max 1 page). Factual, not emotional. State: what you applied for, why it was rejected, why the rejection is incorrect, what you need NSFAS to do.
  5. Upload ALL required supporting documents. Make sure every file is clearly named (e.g. 'ID_copy_certified.pdf') and legible.
  6. Submit. Save your appeal reference number.
  7. Wait 30-60 business days. Status updates appear on myNSFAS.

Common rejection reasons and how to appeal each

  • Household income too high - appeal with proof of income changes (retrenchment letter, late-year income reduction, divorce, household member loss). Include bank statements covering the assessed period.
  • Course not funded - appeal with proof that the course IS NSFAS-funded (course code matches NSFAS-approved list)
  • First-time entering university but listed as continuing - appeal with proof of fresh enrolment + non-attendance at previous institutions
  • Citizenship issue - certified passport / birth certificate / permanent residence permit
  • Family unit composition - certified marriage / death / divorce / dependents documents
  • Documents missing - re-upload clearly named, certified documents
  • Accommodation rejected - see our accommodation-rejected guide for specific tactics
  • Bursary or other funding - if you cancelled another bursary, attach the cancellation letter

If your appeal is rejected

  1. Request a review of the appeal decision. You must include NEW evidence not previously considered.
  2. If the second review fails, options include: applying for the next academic year (with the rejection reason addressed in advance), institutional bursaries, alternative bursary platforms (FundiConnect, Bursaries Portal).
  3. Some students approach the Public Protector for systemic NSFAS issues - long process, not a fast solution.

Frequently asked questions

Officially 30 business days. In practice 30-60+ business days, longer if NSFAS is under administration (since 4 May 2026).
Can I appeal more than one rejection reason?
Yes - submit one appeal that addresses all rejection reasons, with separate motivation paragraphs for each.
What if I miss the 30-day appeal window?
There is no extension. Your only option is to re-apply for the next academic year.
