NSFAS 2026: Practical Guides for Students

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) was placed under administration on 4 May 2026, the third time since 2018. We track what changes for funded students, how to appeal, and what to do when things go wrong.

What's happening (May 2026)

On 4 May 2026, Minister of Higher Education Buti Manamela placed NSFAS under administration for the third time since 2018. Hlengani Mathebula was appointed as Administrator. The accommodation crisis continues - students are facing evictions, landlords face electricity disconnections from unpaid municipal accounts, and 2026 rental rates remain unresolved.

Reassurance from the Minister

Minister Manamela has stated that the administration is not intended to disrupt NSFAS operations: student funding will continue, allowances will continue, and the appeals process will continue. Students should expect some delays during the transition, which may affect payment dates, accommodation approvals, and verification checks.

If your specific situation is urgent (eviction notice, landlord disconnection, rejected appeal), see the accommodation appeal guide.
