Someone Applied for SRD With My ID - What To Do

Updated on 06 November 2026
Short answer: report it to SASSA. The fraud line is 0800 701 701. You can also call 0800 60 10 11 or email GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za. If you can, take your ID to a SASSA office.

"Grant application already active" - what it means

This message comes from the SASSA SRD website. It means there is already an active SRD application on your ID number. You cannot make a second one.

It does not always mean fraud. Check these first:

  • Did you apply before, maybe in 2020 to 2022, with an old phone number?
  • Did a family member or someone at a shop or internet cafe apply for you?

If yes, it is probably your own application. To take it back, use Change Mobile Number on srd.sassa.gov.za. SASSA checks your face against Home Affairs to prove you are the person on the ID. See our change phone number guide.

If nobody you know applied, treat it as fraud and report it (next section).

How to report someone using your ID

These are the channels SASSA publishes in its "You and Your Grant 2026" booklet:

The booklet says fraud can be reported anonymously. When you report, have ready:

  • Your ID number
  • The exact message you saw (for example "grant application already active")
  • Any phone number or bank you saw linked to the application that is not yours

SASSA has not published a step-by-step process or a timeline for these cases. Write down the date, who you spoke to and any reference number.

Can I cancel an application I never made?

Probably not online. The Cancel Application form on the SRD website asks for "phone number used to submit your application" and sends a PIN before it lets you continue. Then it checks your face. If someone else applied with their phone, you will not have that number or the PIN.

The form also only offers reasons like "Found employment" or "Receiving UIF or TERS". There is no "I did not apply" option. So report it to SASSA instead of trying to cancel it yourself.

An unknown phone number is linked to my ID

Change Mobile Number on srd.sassa.gov.za is built for this. SASSA says it first needs "to verify that you are the original applicant", using a face scan against Home Affairs. You do not need the old phone.

Errors you may see, and what they say:

  • "This mobile number is already registered to another beneficiary. Please use a different number" - your new number is on someone else's application. Use a different number.
  • "Mobile number already used 5 times" - that number has been used too often. Use a different number.
  • "Mobile number change already requested" - a change is already waiting.
  • The photo does not match Home Affairs - SASSA says to visit Home Affairs to update your records, then try again.
  • "You have reached the maximum attempts of identity re-verification. Please visit your nearest SASSA office with your ID book for biometric verification."

The last step of the change asks for the last 4 digits of the bank account on the application. If someone put their own bank account on it, you will not know those digits. In that case, report it (above).

If SASSA texted you about a number change you did not ask for, see someone changed my SASSA number.

Someone put their bank account on my application

On the SRD banking page, SASSA says:

"Should you select payment into a bank account, please ensure that you are the owner of the account. SASSA cannot pay your grant into another person's bank account."

Changing banking details online sends a PIN to the phone number on the application. If that phone is not yours, you cannot change it yourself. Report it on 0800 701 701 or GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za.

How long until I can apply again?

SASSA has not published a waiting period. While an application on your ID is active, the website will not let you start a new one. Ask SASSA when you report it.

Protect yourself

From the SASSA booklet:

  • SASSA will never ask for your PIN.
  • SASSA will never ask for your ID number, banking details or PIN on social media or unofficial websites.
  • Do not give personal details to someone who says they are from SASSA until you have checked who they are.

Questions people ask

What does "grant application already active" mean?
It is a message on the SASSA SRD website. It means the system already has an active SRD application on that ID number, so you cannot start a new one. It may be your own old application that you forgot about, or one someone else made with your ID.
Someone applied for SRD with my ID. Who do I report it to?
SASSA lists the Anti-Fraud Line 0800 701 701 for fraud reports. You can also report to the SASSA call centre on 0800 60 10 11 or email GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za. Both are in the SASSA "You and Your Grant 2026" booklet.
Can I cancel an SRD application I never made?
The online "Cancel Application" form asks for the phone number that was used to submit the application, sends a PIN, and then checks your face against Home Affairs. If a stranger applied with their own phone, you will not have that number, so the online form will not work for you. Report it to SASSA instead.
Someone put their bank account on my application. What now?
SASSA says it cannot pay your grant into another person's bank account. Report it on 0800 701 701 or by email to GrantEnquiries@sassa.gov.za. Changing bank details online needs a PIN sent to the phone on the application, so you cannot fix this yourself if the phone is not yours.
How long until I can apply again?
SASSA has not published a waiting period. While an application on your ID is active, the website will not let you start a new one. Ask SASSA when you report it.
Do I need a police case?
SASSA's published guidance does not say a police case is required. If you choose to open one, keep the case number with your report.
