SRD Declined - "Self-Exclusionary Response Found" Explained

Updated on 22 May 2026

If your SASSA SRD status shows "Self-Exclusionary Response Found", it sounds confusing - but it has a simple meaning. One of the Yes/No answers you gave on your SRD application is being read by SASSA as a reason you do not qualify. The system uses your own form answers against the SRD eligibility rules.

Quick answer: Submit a reconsideration on srd.sassa.gov.za within 90 days. Explain in plain words what you actually meant on the question that flagged you, and upload a bank statement or sworn affidavit as proof.

What "Self-Exclusionary Response" means

SASSA's SRD form has a set of Yes/No questions about your income, employment, and other support you may receive. When you tick Yes to any of them, the system marks that as a "self-exclusionary response" - in plain English, you have told SASSA something that, on the face of it, disqualifies you.

Most people who get this decline did not realise their answer would be read so literally. A one-off transfer from a relative is not the same as a salary, but the form does not give you a chance to explain in the moment. That is what the reconsideration is for.

Common triggers for this decline

  • You said you receive income - even if it was a once-off gift from family or a refund.
  • You said you are registered for UIF - even from a job that ended years ago. You are still on the UIF database.
  • You said you are registered for NSFAS - even if you are no longer studying or never received funding.
  • You said you have a job - even casual, piece-work, or a once-off gig.
  • You said you are in government employment - even as a short-term contractor.
  • You said you receive another social grant - SRD R370 cannot be combined with most other SASSA grants.

How to fix it - step by step

  1. Step 1: Submit a reconsideration request within 90 days of the decline. After 90 days you lose the right to reconsider for that month.
  2. Step 2: Log in to srd.sassa.gov.za with your 13-digit ID number and registered cellphone. Verify with OTP. Find the "Request Reconsideration" or "Reconsideration" link on the dashboard.
  3. Step 3: Pick the specific declined month and explain the misunderstanding in clear, simple words. Be specific. Was the family transfer a one-off? Has your UIF claim lapsed? Did you finish studying and is NSFAS no longer paying you? State it plainly.
  4. Step 4: Upload supporting documents. The right document depends on what triggered the decline (see "What proof works" below).
  5. Step 5: Submit and save your reference number. Then wait 30 to 90 days for SASSA to review.

Sample reconsideration wording

Keep your wording short, plain, and specific. Use one of these templates as a starting point:

If you were flagged for "Income identified":

"The R[amount] deposit on [date] was a one-time gift from a family member to help with [reason: groceries, school fees, transport]. It is not regular income. I am unemployed and have no other income for that month. See attached affidavit and bank statement."

If you were flagged for "UIF registered":

"I am registered on the UIF database from previous employment that ended on [date]. I am not currently receiving any UIF payments. My UIF status can be verified on the Department of Labour system."

If you were flagged for "NSFAS registered":

"I was previously registered with NSFAS in [year], but I am not currently studying and not receiving NSFAS funding. See attached NSFAS status letter."

What proof works

  • Sworn affidavit - free at any SAPS station, or about R30 at a Commissioner of Oaths. Use this to confirm you are unemployed or that a deposit was not income.
  • Bank statement for the month being assessed, showing only that single deposit and no recurring income.
  • UIF lapse letter - confirms your previous UIF claim is closed.
  • Letter from your employer confirming the date your employment ended.
  • NSFAS status letter from my.nsfas.org.za confirming you are not currently funded.

How long does reconsideration take?

  • Your status will show as pending during the review.
  • Typical turnaround is 30 to 90 days.
  • During peak periods (just after big SASSA announcements or grant increases), it can take longer.
  • If approved, back-payment for the affected months usually arrives in the next 1 to 2 payment cycles.

What if reconsideration is declined too?

You still have one more route - a final appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).

  • Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals.
  • You have 30 days from the final decline date to lodge the appeal.
  • The bar is higher at ITSAA - bring stronger proof and a clearer written reason.
