Postbank Gold Card Final Deadline 31 August 2026 - What 2.9 Million SASSA Beneficiaries Need to Do

Updated: 2026-05-22

Postbank has confirmed that the SASSA Gold Card will be permanently deactivated on 31 August 2026, with no further extensions planned. Approximately 2.9 million SASSA beneficiaries still on the Gold Card must switch to the new Postbank Black Card before that date or risk losing access to their grant payments.

The final rollout drive began on 29 April 2026, with Postbank and SASSA setting up additional swap points at SASSA offices, Post Office branches, and dedicated mobile units in rural areas.

Why the Switch Is Happening

The original Postbank Gold Card was issued in 2018 after the controversial Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) contract ended. The card relied on legacy SAPO infrastructure that has been unstable for years - causing the 2023 and 2024 payment outages that left millions waiting in queues.

The new Postbank Black Card runs on the Postbank Limited banking platform, which became operational in 2024. It supports tap-to-pay, ATM withdrawals at any bank, online payments, and the new MyMobicred app for balance checks.

Who Needs to Switch

You need to switch if your SASSA grant is currently paid to a Postbank Gold Card (the older card with a gold-coloured band across the front). This applies to recipients of:

  • Old Age Grant
  • Disability Grant
  • Child Support Grant
  • Foster Care Grant
  • Care Dependency Grant
  • War Veterans Grant

If your grant is paid into a personal bank account (FNB, Capitec, Standard Bank, ABSA, Nedbank, TymeBank, etc.), no action is needed.

How to Get the New Black Card

Step-by-step swap process:

  1. Visit a swap point with your green South African ID book or smart ID card, your existing Gold Card, and the cellphone number registered with SASSA.
  2. Swap points include: SASSA local offices, Postbank branches inside Post Office locations, and announced mobile unit visits to your area. Check sassa.gov.za or call 0800 60 10 11 for the nearest swap point.
  3. Biometric verification is performed on the spot - a fingerprint or face scan to confirm your identity.
  4. Receive your Black Card immediately at the swap point. The card is active straight away.
  5. Set your PIN at any Postbank ATM or branch within 24 hours of receiving the card.

If you cannot travel to a swap point because of disability or age, a family member or registered procurator can swap on your behalf, but they need a power of attorney or SASSA-issued procurator letter. See our guide on applying for a SASSA procurator.

If Your Card Is Lost or Stolen

Lost and stolen Gold Cards must be reported to SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 immediately. You will be issued a Black Card as the replacement - no replacement Gold Cards are being made.

See our guide on what to do if your SASSA card is lost or stolen.

What Happens After 31 August 2026

Any Gold Card still active on 1 September 2026 will be permanently blocked. Your grant will not stop, but you will not be able to access it until you have collected the Black Card. Postbank confirmed there will be no grace period this time.

SASSA has been warning beneficiaries since late 2024 about this transition. The original deadline was March 2025, then extended to December 2025, then to August 2026. Officials say this is the final extension.

What to Watch For

Scammers are exploiting the deadline. SASSA has warned of fake calls and SMSes asking for card details, OTPs, or Postbank PINs. SASSA and Postbank will never:

  • Ask for your PIN over the phone
  • Send you a link to "upgrade your card online"
  • Charge a fee for the Gold-to-Black swap

The swap is free at all official swap points. If anyone asks for money, walk away and report it.
