About Sterkfontein Dam

Sterkfontein is an emergency storage dam for the Integrated Vaal River System. Water is pumped into it from the Tugela River in KwaZulu-Natal and released back into the Vaal River catchment when the Vaal Dam draws down. It almost never releases water under normal conditions, so its level is consistently high. This is one of Gauteng's strategic water reserves.
