BizPortal vs Paying a Service: When Each Makes Sense (2026)

OurPower - Last verified 2026-05-03

The honest framing

Service providers' marketing implies BizPortal is hard. It's not really. The friction is mostly the post-CIPC chain - SARS, UIF, BEE, banking, sector regulators. That's where services genuinely save time.

If you're confident on the post-CIPC chain, BizPortal direct saves R400-R800. If you're not, paying a service is rational.

Use BizPortal direct (R175) if

  • All directors have SA IDs.
  • You're a sole director or have one trusted co-director.
  • Standard short-form MOI is fine.
  • You're comfortable doing your own SARS registered-representative process.
  • You'll handle BO, AR, banking yourself.
  • You don't need a sector regulator (PSIRA, CIDB, NHBRC) packaged.
  • You don't mind contacting SARS / banks if KYC is complex.

Pay a service (R590-R1,450) if

  • You have foreign directors or complex shareholding.
  • You need a sector regulator (PSIRA, CIDB) packaged with the registration.
  • You want hand-holding through SARS, UIF, BEE, banking.
  • You'd value a phone number to call when something gets stuck.
  • Time matters more than R600-R800.
  • You'd otherwise spend 5-10 hours figuring out the post-CIPC chain.

Don't pay a service if

  • You're paying mostly for the BEE affidavit (it's free).
  • You're paying mostly for SARS company registration (BizPortal does it free).
  • The service is upselling you into bookkeeping retainer that costs more than your first year's profit.
  • You're being pushed into a long-form MOI you don't need (R475 vs R175).

What services genuinely add

  • Faster turnaround when CIPC is delayed (they monitor and re-submit).
  • Hand-holding through banking - some have direct relationships with FNB / Standard Bank.
  • Sector packages (CIDB Grade 1, PSIRA business + officer registration, NHBRC).
  • Compliance reminders and Annual Return filing service.
  • A human to call when SARS rejects your registered-representative application.

Frequently asked questions

Does BizPortal really cost only R175?

Yes. R175 with a name (short MOI), R125 without. Verified at https://www.bizportal.gov.za. The services' marketing sometimes obscures this.

Do banks treat companies registered via BizPortal differently?

No. Same legal entity, same docs, same banks.

Can I switch from a service to DIY later?

Yes. You don't "belong" to the service - they just registered the company for you. You can manage the company yourself thereafter.
