K53 Vehicle Controls Study Guide (2026) - Cockpit Controls Explained

Last verified 2026-05-14

What this section covers

The K53 Vehicle Controls section is 10 of the 68 questions. To pass it you need at least 8 correct (the highest pass-rate threshold of any section). It tests your knowledge of what each control in the car does and when to use it.

Primary driving controls

  • Steering wheel - controls direction. Standard SA orientation: right-hand drive (the driver sits on the right of the vehicle).
  • Accelerator - right foot. Provides power. Press gently to maintain speed, harder to accelerate.
  • Brake - right foot. Slows the vehicle. Press progressively, NOT slam unless emergency.
  • Clutch - left foot. Disengages engine from gearbox when changing gears (manual transmission only).
  • Gear lever / shifter - changes gears. Manual: H-pattern of forward gears + reverse. Automatic: P-R-N-D positions.
  • Parking brake (handbrake) - mechanical brake for stationary parking. Engage when stopping; disengage before pulling away.

Steering wheel controls

  • Indicators (turn signals) - LEFT indicator = turning left, RIGHT indicator = turning right. Signal BEFORE the manoeuvre.
  • Headlight switch - typically on the indicator stalk or a separate stalk. Settings: Off, Position lights, Dipped beam (low beam), High beam (main beam).
  • Horn - the centre of the steering wheel. Use only as a warning, not in anger.
  • Wipers - washer stalk usually on the right of the steering column. Settings: Off, Intermittent, Slow, Fast, Single sweep.
  • Hooter / horn - must be functioning by law; used to warn other road users of your presence.

Pedals - left foot vs right foot

  • Right foot operates the BRAKE and ACCELERATOR (never both simultaneously)
  • Left foot operates the CLUTCH (manual transmission only)
  • For automatic: only the right foot is used - left foot rests on the dead pedal
  • When stopping: clutch + brake (manual), brake only (automatic). Engage parking brake when stopping for more than a few seconds.

Instrument cluster (dashboard)

  • Speedometer - shows current speed in km/h
  • Tachometer (rev counter) - shows engine RPM. Don't redline (the red zone) unnecessarily.
  • Fuel gauge - shows fuel level. Reserve light typically comes on at 50-80km remaining.
  • Engine temperature - shows engine coolant temperature. Red zone = overheating; stop safely.
  • Odometer - shows total kilometres travelled (lifetime). Trip odometer can be reset for individual journeys.
  • Warning lights - illuminate when there is a fault. Always investigate before continuing.

Critical warning lights

  • OIL pressure (red) - low oil pressure. STOP IMMEDIATELY to avoid engine damage.
  • TEMPERATURE (red) - engine overheating. STOP IMMEDIATELY, let it cool.
  • BRAKE warning (red) - check brake fluid; check parking brake is fully released.
  • BATTERY / charging (red) - alternator not charging. Drive carefully to a service station.
  • AIRBAG (yellow / red) - airbag system fault. Investigate but not immediately critical.
  • ABS warning (yellow) - anti-lock brakes fault. Brakes still work but ABS may not engage.
  • ENGINE / Check engine (yellow) - fault detected. Drive carefully, get diagnosed.
  • TYRE PRESSURE (yellow) - one or more tyres are low. Check and inflate.

Hazard lights vs indicators

  • Hazard lights (the triangular button) - flash ALL four indicators simultaneously. Use when stopped in an unsafe position, breakdown, or driving slower than traffic flow.
  • Indicators - flash ONE side only (left or right). Use when changing direction, lane changing, or parking.
  • Do NOT use hazard lights while driving in heavy rain or fog - this is a common misconception. Use them only when stationary or in genuine emergency.

Manual transmission - clutch and gear changes

  1. Press the clutch FULLY
  2. Move the gear lever to the desired gear
  3. Release the clutch slowly while gently applying the accelerator
  4. When stopping: brake first, then clutch (avoid stalling)
  5. Never coast in neutral - keep the clutch engaged for engine braking

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are in the K53 Vehicle Controls section?
10 of the 68 questions. You need at least 8 correct (80%) to pass that section - the highest threshold of any section.
Which foot operates the clutch?
The left foot. In manual transmission only. The right foot operates the brake AND accelerator.
Can I use the hazard lights when driving in heavy rain?
No - this is a common misconception. Hazard lights are for when you are STOPPED in an unsafe position or in genuine emergency. Use dipped (low) headlights in bad weather while driving.
