How South African ID Numbers Work
Every South African ID number is exactly 13 digits long. Each section encodes specific information about the holder:
Your date of birth in year-month-day format. The century (1900s or 2000s) is inferred from the year value.
A sequence number indicating gender. 0000-4999 is assigned to females, 5000-9999 to males.
0 indicates a South African citizen. 1 indicates a permanent resident.
Previously used for race classification. Now deprecated and usually set to 8.
A check digit calculated using the Luhn algorithm to detect transcription errors.
Your ID number is processed entirely in your browser. We never store, transmit, or log any ID numbers. No data is sent to any server. You can verify this by checking your browser's network tab while using this tool.
