Free Change of Address Affidavit Generator

A change of address affidavit is a sworn statement confirming that you have relocated from one residential address to another. In South Africa, many institutions require formal proof of address change, and a commissioned affidavit is often the simplest way to provide this, especially if you do not yet have utility bills or bank statements reflecting your new address.

When Do You Need This Affidavit?

You may need a change of address affidavit in the following situations:

  • Updating your address with SARS (South African Revenue Service) for tax purposes.
  • Notifying your bank of your new address for FICA compliance.
  • Updating your employer's records, especially for UIF and tax certificate purposes.
  • Changing your address on your vehicle registration with the traffic department.
  • Updating records with Home Affairs, particularly if you have recently moved.
  • Providing proof of address to a new landlord or property management company when you do not yet have utility bills.

How to Complete and Submit

The affidavit should include your previous address, your new address, and the date you moved. After generating and printing the affidavit, take it to a Commissioner of Oaths. Some institutions may also require a copy of your lease agreement, utility bill, or a letter from your new landlord as additional proof of your new address.

Tip: Include the exact date of your move (or approximate date if you cannot remember the exact date). Use full addresses including street number, street name, suburb, city, and postal code. If you are renting, bring a copy of your lease agreement as supporting documentation. For SARS address changes, you can also update your address directly on eFiling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a change of address affidavit as proof of residence?

An affidavit alone is generally not accepted as primary proof of residence by banks and FICA-regulated institutions. However, it can serve as supplementary documentation, especially when accompanied by a lease agreement, a letter from your landlord, or a utility bill. Some institutions may accept it as temporary proof while you obtain proper documentation.

Do I need to inform Home Affairs when I change address?

There is no legal requirement to notify Home Affairs of every address change. However, your address on the National Population Register should be reasonably current. When you apply for a new Smart ID card or passport, you will provide your current address. For driving licence renewals, the traffic department requires your current address.

How quickly after moving do I need to update my address with SARS?

SARS requires that you update your registered address within 21 business days of a change. You can do this via eFiling, the SARS MobiApp, or by visiting a SARS branch. While a change of address affidavit is not specifically required for SARS, it can serve as supporting documentation.

For complex legal matters, consider consulting a qualified attorney. The affidavit only becomes a legal document once it has been signed and commissioned by a Commissioner of Oaths.
