Public Holidays That Fall on Weekends

In 2026, two public holidays fall on weekends:

What if you work on a public holiday?

The Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA) protects workers who are required to work on public holidays:

  • If you work on a public holiday, you must be paid at double your normal daily wage (2x pay).
  • Your employer may only require you to work on a public holiday if you have agreed to do so in writing.
  • You and your employer can agree that instead of double pay, you will receive paid time off at a later date.
  • If the public holiday falls on a day you would not normally work, and you are asked to work, you must be paid your normal daily wage plus the amount for the work done.

The President may also declare additional special public holidays by proclamation in the Government Gazette. Election days are typically declared as special public holidays. Any such additional holidays for 2026 will be added to this page when announced.
