Frequently Asked Questions About Eskom Power Outages
Is there an Eskom power outage today?
No active Eskom power outages are currently reported in our coverage. Recent faults from the past two weeks are listed below. This is different from load shedding, which follows a national schedule.
What is the difference between an Eskom outage and load shedding?
Load shedding is a planned national rotation that switches everyone off on a published schedule. An Eskom power outage is local and unplanned - a cable fault, transformer failure, vandalism, theft or storm damage that affects a specific area Eskom supplies directly (such as Soweto, the Vaal, or rural towns). This page tracks unplanned outages and load rotation, not the load shedding schedule.
Which areas does Eskom supply directly?
In the big metros, municipalities (City Power, City of Ekurhuleni, City of Tshwane, City of Cape Town) supply most suburbs, but Eskom supplies many townships and outlying areas directly - including Soweto, Sebokeng, Sharpeville and Evaton in Gauteng, and most towns and villages outside the metros across all nine provinces.
How do I report an Eskom power outage?
Report an Eskom outage on the Eskom contact centre line 08600 37566, via Eskom's "Alfred" WhatsApp service on 0860 037 566, or through Eskom's online MyEskom Customer app. Have your account number and address ready.
Why does Eskom keep losing power in my area?
The most common causes of Eskom outages are cable theft and vandalism (especially of substations and mini-subs), transformer overloads and failures, storm and severe-weather damage, and load rotation when a feeder is overloaded. Restoration can take a few hours for a tripped feeder, or 12-48 hours where equipment must be replaced.
