SASSA April 2026: Easter Shifts Payment Dates, New Grant Amounts Kick In
2026-03-22

April 2026 is a big month for South Africa's 18 million grant beneficiaries. Two things are happening at once: the Easter long weekend is disrupting the usual payment schedule, and the new financial year grant increases are kicking in for the first time.

Here is what you need to know about both, and how they affect your payment.

Easter Pushes Payment Dates Forward

Normally, old age grants are paid on the first Tuesday of the month. In April 2026, that Tuesday falls on the 7th - well after the Easter long weekend (Good Friday 3 April, Easter Monday 6 April). That would leave pensioners waiting more than five weeks between their March and April payments.

Based on SASSA's standard payment pattern and the public holiday calendar, the expected schedule for April 2026 is:

  • Older Persons (Old Age Pension): Thursday 2 April
  • Disability Grant: Tuesday 7 April (after the long weekend)
  • Children and Others: Wednesday 8 April
  • SRD R370: 24-30 April (business days)

These dates follow SASSA's standard pattern of paying on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th working days of the month. However, SASSA has not yet officially published the 2026/2027 financial year schedule - the new schedule must be approved by National Treasury first. We will update this page when the official dates are released.

If the expected dates hold, old age pensioners are paid before the long weekend, but disability and children's grants fall after Easter. If you rely on these grants, plan your Easter spending accordingly.

New Grant Amounts from April 2026

The 2026/27 financial year starts on 1 April, which means the annual grant increases take effect with the April payments. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana confirmed the increases in the February 2026 Budget Speech, pegged at roughly 3.4% - in line with inflation but lower than last year's 4.8% bump.

Here is what changes:

GrantWas (March)Now (April)Increase
Old Age (60-74)R2,315R2,400+R85
Old Age (75+) / War VeteransR2,335R2,420+R85

Child SupportR560R580+R20
Grant-in-AidR560R580+R20
SRD (R370)R370R370No change

The SRD grant stays at R370. Government has allocated R36.4 billion to extend SRD payments at the current rate through March 2027, but there is no increase planned.

Stricter Grant Reviews Are Coming

The other big story this financial year is SASSA's crackdown on fraudulent and ineligible grants. National Treasury has pushed the agency to save R2 billion in 2026/27 through tighter verification.

By December 2025, SASSA had already reviewed 6 million bank accounts and 8 million credit bureau records. That exercise flagged 291,581 beneficiaries for review and led to 34,661 grants being cancelled outright. The agency plans to expand this using AI-driven cross-referencing of government databases.

If you receive a review notification via SMS, respond immediately. Ignoring it could lead to your grant being suspended while SASSA investigates.

What Should You Do?

  • Old age pensioners: Your April payment is on 2 April - before Easter. Collect early to avoid long weekend queues at pay points.
  • Disability and children's grant recipients: Your payment falls after Easter (7-8 April). Budget for the long weekend without your April grant.
  • SRD beneficiaries: Your payment window is 24-30 April as usual. Check your status to see your exact date.
  • Everyone: If you get an SMS from SASSA asking you to verify your details, do it right away. The verification drive is real and ignoring it risks suspension.

Looking Ahead

May 2026 should return to a more normal schedule - Workers' Day (1 May) falls on a Friday, so the first working days of the month are unaffected. We will publish the May 2026 payment dates as soon as SASSA confirms them.
