Eskom Expo Set to Launch Regional Science Fairs for Young Scientists Across SA
8 July 2025

Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is preparing to host Regional Science Fairs across 35 regions in South Africa, providing a platform for school students to showcase their scientific research, innovations, and problem-solving capabilities.

Selection Process Complete

This year's participants have already been selected through a rigorous process that began with mandatory district expos and specialized workshops designed to enhance scientific skills. More than 17,500 learners presented research projects at the School and District Expo levels, with the most promising advancing to the regional competitions.

According to Mologadi Motshele, Acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, the initiative aligns with South Africa's strategic goals in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation (STEMI).

"These young scientists are the future problem-solvers who will address the challenges of energy, climate change, healthcare, food security, and digital transformation," Motshele stated.

What's at Stake

The regional fairs will offer participants opportunities to network with peers, educators, and STEMI professionals while competing for various awards including:

  • Best Female Project
  • Best Innovation Project
  • Best Energy Project
  • Best Development Project

Parthy Chetty, Eskom Expo Executive Director, emphasized the significance of these competitions: "The Eskom Expo is South Africa's only national initiative that aims to grow future scientists and engineers for our country. These regional science fairs are the first step to our young scientists engaging with professionals in a meaningful way."

Path to International Recognition

Over 6,000 projects will be exhibited nationwide, with top performers earning places at the Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF). This prestigious event will be held at Emperors Palace Conference Centre in Kempton Park from 6 to 10 October 2025.

Winners at the ISF level may receive bursaries and opportunities to represent South Africa at international science fairs across the globe, including events in the United States, Asia, Europe, and other African countries.

Call for Professional Judges

The organization has issued a call for professionals to volunteer as judges at the regional fairs. Engineers, doctors, teachers, researchers, scientists, and IT professionals are invited to apply through the official website (www.exposcience.co.za).

Professional benefits for judges include:

  • SACE Continuing Professional Development points for teachers
  • CPD points for scientists registered with SACNASP
  • Professional credits through respective industry bodies for other professionals

Outlook

The Eskom Expo represents a significant investment in developing South Africa's future scientific talent pool. While the country continues to face various challenges including energy security, initiatives like this aim to nurture the next generation of problem-solvers who might eventually contribute to addressing these national priorities.

For those interested in attending, dates and venues for all Regional Science Fairs can be found on the Expo's official website.
