June & July Petrol and Fuel Prices in South Africa

This page provides the current petrol and fuel prices for June, including the projected fuel prices for July 2025. Petrol and diesel prices are updated monthly on the first Wednesday of each month.

South African motorists experienced modest relief at the pumps in June 2025, with fuel prices decreasing across most grades despite a fuel levy increase.

The price of 95 octane petrol decreased by 5 cents to R21.35 per litre inland, while 93 octane also dropped by 5 cents to R21.24 per litre. Diesel users saw more significant savings, with both 50ppm and 500ppm diesel decreasing by 37 cents per litre. The largest decrease was seen in illuminating paraffin, which dropped by 56 cents per litre, and LPGas, which decreased by 89 cents per kilogram.

These reductions were primarily driven by a stronger rand against the US dollar during the review period, which averaged 18.11 compared to 18.84 in the previous period. However, the decreases were partially offset by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's budget announcement of fuel levy increases: 16 cents per litre for petrol and 15 cents per litre for diesel.

International oil markets showed volatility during May, with petrol product prices increasing while diesel and paraffin prices decreased. The rand's appreciation helped reduce the Basic Fuel Price contribution by approximately 39 cents per litre across all fuel types.

Understanding Your Petrol & Fuel Price

The price you pay at the garage for petrol and diesel is made up of several components. Here's a simple breakdown of what makes up the current fuel price, using Petrol 95 (ULP) in Gauteng (Zone 9C) as an example. Note that coastal prices are lower due to reduced transport costs.

Petrol 95 (ULP) Price Breakdown

Total: R21.35 per litre

Base Cost

R9.8087 (45.94%)
Basic Fuel Price (BFP)Variable
R9.8087(46.00%)

The core cost of petrol and diesel, including international oil prices, shipping, insurance, and storage costs. This is the main component that changes with global oil markets and exchange rates.

Taxes and Levies

R6.3733 (29.85%)
General Fuel Levy
R4.1500(19.00%)

A government tax on petrol and diesel that goes into the national budget. This is a fixed amount that helps fund various government services and infrastructure.

Road Accident Fund (RAF) Levy
R2.1800(10.00%)

A mandatory contribution that helps pay for medical expenses and compensation for people injured in road accidents. This levy is fixed and cannot be changed by fuel companies.

Customs & Excise
R0.0400(0.20%)

Government taxes on imported fuel products. This helps protect local industry and generate revenue.

Petroleum Products Levy
R0.0033(0.02%)

A small levy on petroleum products to fund industry regulation and development.

Margins and Distribution

R5.1700 (24.21%)
Retail Margin
R2.9950(14.00%)

The amount that petrol stations earn for selling fuel. This covers their operating costs, staff salaries, and a small profit margin.

Wholesale Margin
R0.7370(3.00%)

The cost of transporting petrol and diesel from refineries to storage depots. This covers the expenses of fuel wholesalers who distribute fuel across the country.

Secondary Storage
R0.3800(2.00%)

Costs for storing fuel at depots before distribution to service stations.

Secondary Distribution
R0.1880(1.00%)

Costs for transporting fuel from depots to service stations.

Transport / Zone Differential
R0.8700(4.00%)

Additional costs for transporting petrol and diesel to areas further from the coast. This helps equalize prices across different regions of South Africa.

Adjustments

R0.0000 (0.00%)
Equalisation (Slate) LevyVariable
R0.0000(0.00%)

A balancing mechanism that adjusts for differences between predicted and actual fuel costs. When oil prices change rapidly, this levy helps smooth out price changes. Currently set at zero as there are no significant under- or over-recoveries to balance.

What makes up the petrol and fuel price?

The petrol price in South Africa is made up of several key components: about 46% is the Basic Fuel Price, which includes the cost of crude oil, shipping, and storage; around 29% goes to taxes and levies like the General Fuel Levy and the Road Accident Fund; and roughly 24% covers distribution and retail margins, including transport, storage, and profit for wholesalers and service stations. Coastal prices are slightly lower due to reduced transport costs. See the full price breakdown below for detailed information about each component.

When are fuel prices updated?

Fuel prices in South Africa are updated monthly on the first Wednesday of each month. The next price update will be on 2 July 2025. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) announces the official prices a few days before they take effect.

Why are coastal fuel prices different from inland prices?

Coastal fuel prices are lower than inland prices because they don't include the additional transport costs of moving fuel from coastal refineries to inland areas. The price difference is mainly due to the Transport/Zone Differential component, which helps cover the costs of transporting fuel to areas further from the coast.
